On Wednesday, August 19, we received a visit from Hurricane Genevieve, the 7th hurricane of the season. It started as a very strong hurricane that came from the Pacific Ocean affecting with rain and winds the states of, Jalisco, Nayarit and Colima, but when it was getting closer to Baja California Sur it dropped in degrees. From category 4 it dropped to 1 according to the Saffir Simpson scale in one day.

It was fortunate that it was a category 1 because it passed 40 miles from Cabo San Lucas. The closest point was near Migriños Beach.

Yes, we were very lucky. This hurricane left behind very strong rains. Of course the beaches were black-flagged and the ports were closed.

Did it affect the population a lot?

Yes, it is a very populated area.

What other measures were taken to protect the population?

Shelters were set up for those affected, with all the precautions to avoid the spread of Covid 10, during their stay. Throughout the early hours of Thursday morning, the Mayor of Los Cabos and her team helped the people who had to be evacuated. The government insisted that we not leave our homes because of the floods.

Of course, that's when most accidents happen. I wonder if they cut off the power?

    Yes, there were power cuts.

When does the hurricane season start?

For the Pacific Ocean on May 15 for the Atlantic Ocean on June 1. For this year, 16 phenomena had been predicted, we have already passed 7, but it is said that September and October will have the most intense ones.

Some of them we barely know about because they happen in the Ocean. When does the hurricane season end?

It ends in November, fortunately. But this year 2020 experts say it is an extremely active season, the first or second in the records.

Uff the 2020 continues to surprise us: pandemic, explosions, the fires in California, this 2020 is terrible... They say the California Bay Area's lightning explosion will go into the record books as the 2020 Siege. Within a week, some of these fires merged to form the second and third largest wildfires in the state's history.

Uy Siege of 2020, how terrible this situation is, from here we greet those who are living these dramatic moments.

But, let's go back to the hurricanes; what's the difference between a cyclone, a tropical storm, a hurricane and a typhoon?

A tropical storm is a storm with winds of less than 119 km per hour and rainfall, but it does not have a greater danger. Cyclone, hurricane and typhoon are circular storms that form over warm water with low pressure in the center and winds greater than 119 km per hour. The term is given according to the region of the planet in which it happens. Hurricane is used for the north of the Atlantic, northeast of the Pacific, the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Typhoon or cyclone: in the south of the Pacific and in the Indian Ocean

    And who names it?

The list of names for Atlantic tropical cyclones was created in 1953 by the U.S. National Hurricane Center. It is used with some updates for cyclones in other parts of the world. Hurricanes are named each year in alphabetical order except for the letters Q, U, X, Y and Z. Male and female names are alternated. Names are repeated every 10 years. Those of the most terrible hurricanes like Katrina that caused the death of more than 2000 people, Hugo in 1989, Odile here in 2014 are no longer used.

What are the names of the next ones in the Pacific?

Iselle, Julio, Karina, Lowell, Marie, Norbert, Odalys, Polo, Rachel and Simon.

But do hurricanes also have their benefits?

Yes, of course, they are a natural mechanism that the planet has to cool down, they cool the oceans and thus avoid the death of fish and corals.

And also the rivers grow taking away all the garbage that we humans generate

They refresh the atmosphere and clean the area contaminated by

aerosols. Much of the damage from hurricanes is due to poor planning. We build houses in flood zones or near rivers.

We build wooden houses even though we know we are in hurricane zones and strong winds. Nature has its natural processes as it has had them for centuries and we are determined to alter them.

We should remember more often the thought of the Sioux Indians: "Perhaps you remember that this land does not belong to you, but you belong to this land"
